As I expected, kansas city chiefs Defensive tackle Chris Jones failed to report to training camp on Saturday, multiple media reports
A contractual dispute between Jones and the team could extend to the team’s two-week camp or longer.
Jones is entering the final year of his deal as the defensive tackle market continues to soar. That includes the recently signed four-year, $96 million contract with New York Jets defensive tackle Quinen Williams.
Jones had a 21 percent pass rush win percentage last season, the best in the NFL at this position.
Jones, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, signed a four-year, $80 million contract in July 2020. In 2023 he will receive a base salary of $19.5 million. Jones, 28, will earn $500,000 in workout bonuses and $1.25 million in incentive bonuses for 10 sacks this season.
Jones, who turned 29 earlier this month, tied for third place in last season’s Defensive Player of the Year voting with a career-best 15.5 sacks. He has 65 sacks in 107 games (86 starts) in seven NFL seasons.
Tennessee Titans’ Jeffrey Simmons signed a four-year deal worth $94 million, just $1 million less than Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald’s existing four-year deal. Washington Commanders defensive tackle Darron Payne (4-year, $90 million) and New York Giants forward Dexter Lawrence (4-year, $87.5 million) also surpassed Jones among the highest-paid DTs.
