St. Louis trailed 4-1 with Nolan Arenado’s 2-out, 2-run lead in the seventh inning. In the eighth inning, Chicago relievers Michael Fulmer and Mark Reiter Jr. walked the bases with one out, but Alec Burleson grounded out the inning-ending double play.
With two outs in the ninth, Arenado’s ground ball passed Chicago second baseman Christopher Morell and Advert Arzoray hit Wilson Contreras. But Tyler O’Neal flew to midfielder Bellinger. St. Louis stopped 11 runners for the day.
St. Louis pitcher Jack Flaherty (7 wins, 6 losses) threw six innings, giving up four runs in four innings and allowing eight hits, but striking out six.

Bellinger then doubled in the second, singled in the fifth, and then clinched the run in the third with a 13th homer over the ivy-covered wall to the right.
In the seventh inning, Steele was dismissed on a one-out bunt single by Jose Fermín. Julian Merryweather came on and eventually gave Paul Goldschmidt a two-out walk. After a wild pitch by Merryweather advanced both bases, Arenado’s hit ended the game.
